More to Fair Trade than bananas and coffee
August 12, 2008 by theconsciousconsumer
Last year 20% of coffee drunk in the UK was fairly traded. But, there is more to Fair Trade than just bananas and coffee…
Fair Trade’s share of the food market as grown and developed, but what about other products? Where do they fit in in the market place? Are they destined to stay niche? As consumers do you make a conscious decision to buy Fair Trade products? Or, is it a luxury you buy on occassion?
As a culture do we need to change our mind set? The trend to date as been quick pace, instant gratification, price-led and a throw away society. Awareness as grown that there are ramifications to this life style and as many of us try to slow the pace down, by adding meaning to not just our own lives but others’ we can start to make changes for the better.
Change can be made and by anyone. Simple little changes made by everyone can culmilate and consequently bigger changes ensue and those in powerful positions (commercial, political…) will listen and take note.
